Nobody’s Home is a dance/video/theater piece created in collaboration with the video artist Aurore Aulong.
The choreographic methods used by Patricia Chen proceed by way of a sort of game of “telephone” applied to movement – a process which translates movement into words and then interprets them through gestures established through (faulty) transmission – as well as the “cut-up” techniques used by the American Beat poets. The result is a collection of quirky archetypal images which spring from childhood, simple games, everyday ritual and ordinary insanity. The four characters move through a disquieting landscape which exposes the savage side of the urban structures which offer us a false sense of security. They go about their business in a solitude which is only occasionally interrupted by fleeting, accidental contacts. Criss-crossed with images of exile, voyages, and the idea of rebuilding one’s identity from the contents of a suitcase, this dance, at once funny and sad, is expressed through an idiosyncratic language of movement in which the residues of words and dreams cohabit.
It’s Buster Keaton meets David Lynch. Poised on the threshold of the family abode as if on the edge of the abyss, these ghost-clowns implore us to take a closer look. The lights are on but nobody’s home.

Nobody’s Home est une création en collaboration avec la vidéaste Aurore Aulong, est une pièce de danse/vidéo/théâtre.
Les méthodes chorégraphiques utilisées par Patricia Chen procèdent par une sorte de « téléphone arabe » du mouvement – un processus qui passe par une traduction du mouvement en mots, une interprétation gestuelle par transmission (ratée) et des « cut-ups » tirés des poètes Beat américains – qui fait resurgir des archétypes en évoquant l’imaginaire de l’enfance, la simplicité du jeu, le rituel quotidien et la folie ordinaire. Dans un paysage inquiétant qui montre le coté sauvage des structures faussement sécurisantes des agglomérations urbaines, les quatre personnages évoluent dans une solitude interrompue par des contacts fugitifs et aléatoires. Traversée par des images d’exil, du voyage, d’une identité reconstruite des contenus d’une valise, cette danse drôle et triste à la fois s’exprime à travers un langage de gestes singuliers et expressifs qui contiennent le résidu des mots et des rêves.
C’est Buster Keaton qui rencontre David Lynch. Perchés au seuil du foyer familial comme au bord de l’abysse, ces fantômes/clowns nous incitent à regarder de plus près : Il y a de la lumière, mais il n’y a personne à la maison.

I metodi coreografici usati da Patricia Chen consistono in una sorta di gioco del “telefono senza fili” applicato al movimento – un processo che traduce lo stesso in parole e le reinterpreta attraverso gesti stabiliti dopo una (difettosa) trasmissione – alla stregua delle tecniche “cut up” utilizzate dai poeti della Beat Generation Americana. Il risultato è una collezione di rapide immagini archetipiche che scaturiscono dall’infanzia, da semplici giochi, rituali quotidiani e ordinaria follia. I quattro personaggi si muovono in un paesaggio angosciante che fa emergere il lato selvaggio delle strutture urbane che ci forniscono un falso senso di sicurezza. Essi procedono ognuno per conto proprio in una solitudine che solo talvolta è interrotta da contatti fugaci, accidentali. Questa danza, attraversata da immagini di esilio, viaggi e dall’idea di ricostruire la propria identità a partire dal contenuto di una valigia, si esprime grazie ad un linguaggio idiosincratico di movimento in cui coabitano residui di parole e sogni.
Buster Keaton incontra David Lynch. Composti sulla soglia della casa familiare come sull’orlo dell’abisso, questi pagliacci-spettro ci implorano di dare un’occhiata più da vicino. Le luci sono accese ma nessuno è in casa.
